The Church, the State, Reality TV and Tim Tebow
Whether you love him or hate him, Tim Tebow is someone everyone has been talking about for the last year or so, but especially in the second half of the NFL season where he's more often than not been a stone cold beast in the 4th quarter. I've read a lot of different opinions about why he's loved or hated and have decided that there are two overarching opinions that stem. One, he's a genuinely good guy. Two, he seems to say all the right things.
We live in an age where we're inundated with distractions—stemming mostly from the internet, but more often than not, we are a reality-tv-society, which means (whether we like it or not) we expect to see people fail, we love to see them humiliated and we desperately want to see if they can overcome their hardships and reach the level of greatness and esteem in which we once held them. It's sickening if you really think about it deeply.
This takes me back to Tim Tebow saying all the right things. He was interviewed recently and the reporter brought up the fact that people suggest that he mentions God too frequently (and that this repetition is what annoys his critics), Tebow said, "If you're married, and you have a wife, and you really love your wife, is it good enough to only tell your wife that you love her on the day you get married? Or should you tell her every single day when you wake up and have the opportunity? That's how I feel about my relationship with Jesus Christ."
Wow, how can anyone find fault in this answer? Which brings me to a point I mentioned on Facebook earlier about Politicians, Religious faith and why Tim Tebow is so hated. This just proves how ass-backward our country is, our constitution ensures separation of church and state, but every since Ronald Reagan was president, there has been a campaign by followers of televangelists like Jerry Falwell and the 500 Club to infiltrate government with people (agents) who are more sympathetic to their cause. For the last 30 it has worked and the Tea Party is the culmination of such planning. It seems like in every election cycle candidates are so gung ho to prove how faithful they are or to prove how unfaithful (or un-American) certain candidates or POTUS are where there's clearly no place for it.
So why then is religion and faith so important in politics—where it has no place, but not in other aspects of American life like football (You can't get anymore American than football!!)? How can an American football player who represents all of these ideals be so loathed by what seems like a majority of society—you will hear people say he's not a skilled enough QB or that it seems he wants all the attention to himself when he gets down on bended knee to give thanks to the Almighty instead of celebrating with his teammates etc etc.
I'm not entirely sure of why Tim Tebow is so transcendent, but maybe it has to do more with us than it does his character.
